NAPPANEE Jay Olson will serve as Wa-Nees athletic director beginning July 1. The School Board of Trustees hired Olson during their meeting Monday, April 14.
Olson attended Wabash College where he obtained a bachelors degree in history. In 1992 he received his masters degree in Education from Indiana University South Bend. He came to Wa-Nee schools in the 1986-87 school year to teach Social Studies at NorthWood High School and has remained in that position through the 2002-03 school year.
During that time Olson has been a Social Studies Academic Super Bowl coach for five years and an assistant coach in track, wrestling and football.
Olson, his wife and two daughters reside in the Wa-Nee Community School district. His wife is a fourth grade teacher at Woodview Elementary School and his daughters, Morgan, a first grader and Taylor, a fourth grader, also attend Woodview.
Mr. Olson has demonstrated the technical and professional skills, personal qualities, and athletic experiences necessary for becoming a successful athletic director, said Superintendent Joe Sabo. As a coach and as an event supervisor in the athletic department, he has a working knowledge of the responsibilities of the athletic director. As a teacher he is familiar with the Wa-Nee community and the Wa-Nee school system.
We are confident that Mr. Olson will provide the capable administration necessary to continue the strong athletic tradition for Wa-Nee schools.
The position of athletic director for Wa-Nee schools was posted throughout the State of Indiana after the resignation of Todd Sheets. Twenty-six applicants expressed interest in this position and Lou Bonacorsi, Rick Coffin and Joe Sabo screened 13 submitted applications and narrowed them down to six who were most qualified.
Three candidates were Wa-Nee employees and three were from outside the district. The six candidates were interviewed and the field was narrowed to three who were interviewed a second time.
Im excited, said Olson. NorthWood has a deep history of athletic ability and I want to continue the tradition and build on it. I have worked with the coaches for 17 years and have a good relationship with them.
