PLYMOUTH It will be a little more difficult to leave Plymouth on U.S. 30 West beginning today.
InDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) is planning to close that loop on U.S. 30, said Plymouth Engineer Mike Strang. The west bound ramps will be closed so they can begin work on the bridges.
InDOT has hired a crew to repair, widen and remove three bridges on U.S. 30 between Michigan Road and Western Avenue. The project will take 12-15 months to complete.
Beginning today that stretch of U.S. 30 will be closed. Strang said the local detour recommends motorists use Hoham Drive (formerly 7C Road), over to Oak Road, back out to U.S. 30 West.
Strang said InDOTs official detour uses U.S.30 east to U.S. 31, then circle around to U.S. 30, west of the construction.
The plans call for the bridge over North Michigan Road to be widened in time for the Ind. 17 project, scheduled to begin next year. The bridge over the abandoned tracks will be removed and the bridge over Western Avenue will be repaired.
Strang said the west ramps will be closed until sometime in September which means they are scheduled to be closed during the Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
There is only one ramp that will affect the festival, Strang added. You will be able to come in to Plymouth the same way. That will not change. Getting out of town will be the problem where people will need to use the detours.
Strang said Plymouth Mayor Jim Yeazel was to meet with the Blueberry Festival Committee and update them on the project.
Travel on U.S. 30 will be altered for the next year. Strang said once the west bound lanes are done, the construction crew and InDOT will close the east bound ramps during the spring and summer months in 2004.
Road construction will be a way of life for Plymouth residents for the next two to three years. Towards the end of the bridgework, the Ind. 17 project will begin which will effect traffic on North Michigan from Klinger Street to Hoham Drive.
Traffic lanes will be reduced. Strang said at least one lane in each direction will be open at all times.
