PLYMOUTH The local chapter of the American Red Cross can use a few good, dedicated volunteers.
The Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross disaster committee will conduct its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The committee will meet at the Red Cross office, 215 West Garro Street in Plymouth.
Harriet Wilson, executive director of the Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said committee members are inviting residents who want to join their group to attend the session.
Wilson said when people think of the American Red Cross, they think of bloodmobiles. In fact, the organization offers a wide variety of programs. Wilson said it is the Red Cross who can contact a loved one in the military overseas when there is an emergency back home.
Red Cross volunteers and staffers are at the scene of disasters. Locally, it is the Red Cross who gives a family a place to stay if they have been burned out of their homes. They also provide clothing and food for the victims.
We can always use more volunteers, Wilson stated. We would like to have more people on our disaster committee, which is very important.
The local chapter of the Red Cross depends heavily on volunteers. Outside of annual funding from the United Way of Marshall County, the Red Cross relies on donations and fund raisers to keep the doors open from year to year.
The disaster committee plans on action that can be taken in the event of a disaster in Marshall County. As part of its training, the Red Cross participates in various mock disaster drills every year.
