ARGOS Traffic was backed up for more than a mile on US 31 near 14th Road Wednesday as emergency crews cleared the debris from a crash that claimed the life of an Argos teenager.
Patricia A. Bennett, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marshall County Coroner. The cause of death was massive blunt trauma.
Bennett was a passenger in a GMC Jimmy driven by Andrew D. Guennette-Thornton, 19, of Plymouth, who was treated and released with minor injuries.
Two other passengers, Kevin Raymond, 43 of Plymouth, and Anthony Guerro, 17, of Plymouth, were airlifted to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne. Both were listed in critical condition at press time.
The accident occurred about 4:15 p.m. on US 31 just south of 14th Road. Witnesses at the scene claim Thornton was west bound on 14th Road when he crossed US 31. Thornton did not stop in the median and crossed the path of a E & P Paving truck, which could not stop in time to avoid the collision.
The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.
Police, fire and EMS units from Argos, Marshall County, Plymouth and the Indiana State Police responded to the scene. Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to free some of the crash victims from the mangled remains of the GMC Jimmy.
Bennett was a student at Argos Jr.-Sr. High School. Counselors will be on hand today to talk with the grieving students who knew Bennett.
The crash marks the second fatal accident in Marshall County in the past 10 days. Rhonda Horn of Rochester, died Monday from injuries she suffered in a crash earlier this month.
