PLYMOUTH Despite the sluggish economy, Marshall County residents opened their hearts and their wallets to turn the annual MDA Lock Up into another successful fund raiser.
We have raised $22,500 and were still counting, MDA District Director Stephanie Santos told the Pilot News Thursday.
The Lock Up was to run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but residents were collecting money before 9 a.m. and still making calls after 5 p.m.
Plymouth has always been good to us, Santos added. Not only with the pledges but with this event. Joe Martin always opens his door and lets us have our way with the place for a day, the restaurants are generous and the volunteers are great.
The Lock Up was held at Martin Country Motors. Each Jailbird was someone who had a warrant out for their arrest by someone else who thought the person would raise money. Most of the jailbirds were placed in the lock up and given a $1,000 bail, where inmates spent an hour calling people raising money. At the end of an hour, you counted your pledges and left to make room for the next six or seven jailbirds.
Santos said there were about 110 jailbirds. The three who raised the most money were Don Wendel, Glen Whitmarsh and Jack Oliver.
Last year MDA raised $27,000 during the Lock Up. The 2003 figure will fall somewhere between $22,500 and $23,500. Santos said that is impressive, given the state of the economy.
Plymouth is never far from the mark, Santos said. The people here always come within a few thousand dollars one direction or the other, of the year before. It is very steady. We are thankful for the support we receive here.
