BOURBON Triton High School Principal Rick Dehne is working on a random drug testing policy for the school corporation.
Schools across the state are taking a close look at drug testing policies since some of the measures failed to cut constitutional muster two-three years ago.
Dehnes policy, which was presented to the Triton School Board Monday, is similar to the one he used during the years he served as Argos Junior-Senior High School principal. That policy mirrors the measure at the Bremen Public Schools.
The proposed policy will apply to all students in grades seven through 12 who take part in an athletic program, drive to school, an extracurricular club, and participate in band or choir performances.
Students can also voluntarily participate in the testing.
Dehne said the test is necessary. It is not used to get students in trouble or suspended, but as a deterrent.
The test utilizes a number system. A group of numbers are put together when it is time to conduct the test. The numbers are assigned to students. When a number is selected, that student provides a urine sample for testing.
The drug test costs $15.
Most schools do not automatically kick a student out of school if they fail a drug test or if they are caught with drugs at school. The student faces a suspension, but they can redeem themselves by going through the school corporations remediation process which involves counseling, parental involvement and no additional offenses.
Dehne plans to do more work on the policy and bring it back to the school board in late May or early June.
