PLYMOUTH The man accused of taking a Plymouth Police officer on a wild ride on the hood of his car pleaded not guilty in Marshall Superior Court to the charges stemming from the incident.

Timothy A. Keilman faces five charges: Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, battery to a police officer and reckless driving.

Plymouth Police officer Steve Hansen escaped serious injury during the ordeal. He suffered minor bruises after he rode on the hood of a moving vehicle for about a block.

Hansen was at the Speedway gas station on North Michigan Street about 12:28 a.m., May 10 when he observed a subject with the aroma of alcohol on his person. Hansen asked the subject to stop. As he approached him with the portable breath tester, Keilman jumped in his car, started the engine and pulled forward.

As the car moved forward Hansen approached the front of the vehicle, attempting to make the suspect stop. Keilman allegedly accelerated, forcing Hansen onto the hood of the car. Keilman drove about one-half of a block with Hansen hanging on to the hood. Hansen said Keilman made several attempts to throw the officer off the car.

Witnesses claim Keilman drove back to the Speedway. Hansen was still hanging on to the car.

When Keilman pulled into the station, Hansen jumped off the hood and told Keilman to exit the vehicle. The suspect refused. Hansen, with the assistance of several residents watching the incident, forcibly removed Keilman from his car.

Keilman originally faced a possible OWI charge. He now faces more than 10 years in prison if convicted on the five counts.

A pre-trial conference is set for today. The deadline for Keilman to make a plea agreement is Aug. 25.
