BREMEN On May 20, representatives from the VFW, American Legion, Kiwanis Club and Air Force Association gathered at the Bremen VFW for their annual Memorial Day celebration.
VFW Commander Tom Jordan welcomed the huge crowd, made up of people excited about supporting U.S. troops.
Kiwanis President Dick Kline led the Pledge of Allegiance and Chorister Paul Cripe lead the group in singing America.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary provided a steak dinner with all the trimmings.
The Purdue Extension Women of Song, directed by Eileen Wright, provided entertainment. Helena Hand introduced the group.
Bremen eighth grader Justin Hershberger gave a Power Point presentation that included photos of the highlights of the school-sponsored Washington D.C. trip he took over spring break. Hershbergers trip was made possible by the VFW. Mrs. Jan Reed, student trip adviser, said that Justin took the initiative to create his oral presentation as a thank-you to the VFW.
Commander Jordan introduced Air Force Association President Paul Reese who, after listening to the Purdue Choir sing Back Home Again in Indiana, told a story about being in combat during WWII. Reese was a navigator on a bomber on a hazardous mission and on the way home after leaving the frightening danger area began to sing Back Home Again in Indiana. He didnt know he had his microphone on and everyone in the aircraft heard him. From then on the airmen would sing that song while on the way home and after leaving the danger area.
Guest of honor for the evening was Heather Johnson, area representative for Congressman Chris Chocola.
After several announcements, Paul Cripe closed the meeting by leading everyone in singing God Bless America.
The VFW walls rang with song, support for our troops and love of America in preparation for the Memorial Day Weekend.
