CULVER The Culver School Board will once again conduct an executive session tonight, immediately following the regular meeting.
The purpose of the closed door meeting is to discuss collective bargaining. School officials are not allowed to comment on executive sessions. There is a good chance the board will talk about the ongoing impasse between the board and the Culver Education Association.
Culver teachers and the school board reached an impasse two years ago. The key issues are insurance premium costs and salaries.
The Pilot News learned the two sides reached a tentative agreement on the first year of the contract, but the terms of the remaining years are unsettled.
The school board has conducted numerous executive sessions. The teachers have taken their case to the streets with various protests with little progress.
An option to borrow money on the teacher retirement fund was suggested earlier this year. Kent Kimpel, UniServ Director with the Indiana State Teachers Association, said that option will provide the revenue to fund a new multi-year deal.
Argos teachers and Union-North United teachers are also working without a new contract. The teachers in the school corporations are working under the terms of their 2001 contracts.
A mediator recently conducted negotiations at Union-North (LaVille). No progress was made.
Kimpel introduced the borrowing option at Argos and is trying to get the Union-North School Board is examine the option.
The regular Culver School Board session is set for 7 p.m. in the administration office. Items on the agenda include:
A presentation by Mary Kay Davis on the JESSE program.
Accept diesel fuel bids.
Discuss and possibly act on summer contracts.
Reports from Culver Superintendent Brad Schuldt and individual board members.
