PLYMOUTH The Plymouth Board of Works voted Monday to open bids for the renovation and expansion of the Marshall County Senior Center.

The board conducted a special meeting Monday because there was not a quorum during the May 27 session.

Plymouth Architect Brent Martin asked the board to approve seeking bids on the $400,000 project.

Max Schuh and Ed Kelso voted to okay the request. Board member-Plymouth Mayor Jim Yeazel was not present.

City and county officials are hoping to have a remodeled senior center by early January, 2004. The center will also be the home of the Marshall County Council on Aging, Older Adult Services.

The center, located at 1305 West Harrison Street, now has 4,447 square feet, according to Brent Martin of B.A. Martin Architects. The new center will be 1,604 square feet larger.

The city received a $200,000 grant and matched it with another $200,000. The city will pay $175,000, the county $15,000 and the Marshall County Community Foundation will pay $10,000.

The project will include:

A new roof, ADA compliant toilet rooms, a new mechanical system.

Three activity rooms separated by movable partitions, a woodcrafter classroom, a computer classroom, and offices for Older Adult Services.

A small serving kitchen, health screening room and an outdoor plaza.

Martin noted the most substantial change to the facility is orienting the main entrance toward the parking lot to the west and creating a drive-under canopy.

Work is scheduled to begin in July. The project should take about six months to complete.
