Merle Norman has new home

PLYMOUTH Vida Creed, owner of Plymouths Merle Norman store, has been serving the Plymouth community at her location at 211 N. Michigan St., for 24 years.

Nothing is forever. Creed has moved to a new location.

Creed moved her beauty store from its downtown location to Water Street, beside the current pool hall.

I really just wanted a bigger location, Creed said about her move, which is one block east of where her shop used to be only a week ago.

Her new shop is indeed bigger, by 200 square feet. The space is something that Creed never had at her old location, where she had to deal with what little space she could use.

I had to cram my office underneath the displays, she commented on how she used the space she had.

Not only does she have room for her own office at her new location, she also has two other rooms that she is using for a gift room and a jewelry room.

After opening up her store back in 1979, the change in venues has been tough on Creed, but the move had to be done because of the billing situation at her last location.

(The move) was real heart wrenching for me, Creed explained. But I am really excited to be here, and very happy.

Creed first set up her shop along Michigan St. because of other stores in the area, like Bosworths and Treats For Her, but as the years went by the shops left and so did the bustling crowds along the downtown street.

The downtown area used to be filled with all retail stores, Creed reminisced. That was when the downtown area was the place to be.

Those times have come and gone in Plymouth, and Creed began looking to move out of her location back in the first of March. The location on Water Street turned out to be the best fit for Creed, and she hustled to move all her things out of the Michigan St. location in two days over the weekend.

Merle Norman is national chain, so I had to take 36 pictures of the location inside and out, and have it okayed with them before moving in, she explained. In order to avoid paying rent at this location, and the old location, I had to move out in a hurry.

Merle Norman will once again open its doors on June 9, and will hold its Open House on June 21. Creed has already been working at getting the word out about her move in newspapers, on the radio and through her own means.

Ive been mailing out 700 post cards to my strong client base, Creed said, and she is hoping that if she does move again she will have even more than 700 customer cards to send out.
