PLYMOUTH The search for the 2003 Marshall County 4-H King and Queen began on Monday , in the Purdue Cooperative Extension Office.
The 16 candidates got together to explain What 4-H means to me and to also give interviews to the three judges who will decide who will take home the crowns at 7 p.m. on July 20 at the 4-H Fairgrounds.
The tone for the night was pretty somber in light of the fact that the 2002 4-H King is the late Todd Michel, who was killed in a traffic accident in June.
Michel was remembered by Randy Dickson, who asked for a moment of silence. Michel was also referred to during speeches given by Tate Chapman and Michels younger brother Scott.
The mood was somber, but stayed on the light side, with a lot of fun going into the contest.
I think (the contest) is going really well, President of the 4-H Council Herb Newman commented. We have got a good turnout in the attendance, and we appreciate all the kids that come out for this.
The role of the 4-H King and Queen is to help award ribbons and awards during the Marshall County 4-H Fair.
In becoming a king and queen, the candidates first submit their achievement records which chronicle leadership activities and different presentations the candidate has participated in, next the candidates give their presentations followed by interviews.
Newman knows the scoring process well, as he was awarded the title of 4-H King back in 1976.
Im not sure what the scoring system is, but I believe that the emphasis of the scoring goes in the presentation and interview process, Newman explained.
All 16 candidates were awarded medallions sponsored by Coca-Cola Classic during Monday nights event.
The 4-H King and Queen are each awarded $100 cash, with the queen also being awarded a tiara and a diamond pin. The queen also goes on to compete in the Indiana State Fair, with the Marshall County 4-H Council paying a percent of the money she spends on outfits.
