Clifton brings food show to Culver

By Gloria Reed

CULVER After 25 years of the same boring food, Culver Community Schools food service director Carin Clifton is about to make changes.

Clifton began her search for different menu items kids want, with all the important nutrients and vitamins and minerals, by attending food service shows throughout the area. But, she wasnt finding exactly what she wanted for the schools.

I became food service director in March, Clifton said. I went to food shows to find out if they had something pertaining for schools. So I talked to Pat Harper from Gordon Food Service and found they started doing mini food shows last year.

Clifton asked Harper to set up a mini food service show at Culver Jr-Sr High School to let other school food service people know whats available to tempt kids palates.

Clifton went around and talked with the Culver schools principals and Brad Schult, superintendent and got permission to host the show at the high school which was held recently.

Then she held a poster contest offering kids their favorite menu choice for free if they won the contest.

Casey Keiper won the contest and got all the french fries she could eat. Keipers poster was sent out to area schools in neighboring communities and in Culver inviting others to the show.

Food service workers from Culver, Knox, Rochester, Winamac, Plymouth, Triton, LaVille and Oregon-Davis schools filled plates and bags with new taste treats.

The attendees were treated to Albies famous pasties, Albies famous Deli-folds featuring chicken fajita, steak and cheddar and more; Albies e.z. jammers: peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches without the crust; Albies Calzones; SoBes Lizard packs (drinks); NorSun Food Groups baked Idaho potatoes, which are triple baked and then frozen; Veryfines Fruit 2 O; Ice Cream GFS Style; Country Fresh flavored milk, including rootbeer flavored and latte mocha flavored milk; alec stephens food line; Tysons Crispitos; and Basic American Foods Potato Pearls Excel.

Kids tastes have changed dramatically, said Dean Rapp, Mascari Association representing Tyson Foods. Youd be amazed at how different their tastes are today.

Clifton and Harper plan on making the mini food service show a yearly event to keep providers updated on new products and items available for the industry.
