Town-wide trash pick up topic
By Gloria Reed
CULVER The possibility of town-wide trash pick up was presented to the Culver Town Council at their meeting Wednesday night.
Council member Russ Mason told the council he has had numerous requests from residents and business owner Susie Mahler for the town to have trash pick up for the residents.
The council agreed trash is a problem throughout town.
The people put it in the dumpsters at the dentists office, the park the Lions, Mason said.
Council members agreed they have had calls about trash and problems about trash being dumped where it shouldnt be.
Recently, Kelly Young, park superintendent, told the council about lots of trash from residents being dumped in the parks trash cans. She said it blows all over the park and she has to pick it up herself. She said it was becoming a problem for the town and the park.
It would be a benefit to the town in the long run if we have municipal trash pick up.
Council member John Sage was concerned about the cost effect it might have on senior citizens.
Another concern from the council was the recycling program and how restrictive it might be for residents.
Winamac did this and it was so restrictive, said Barbara Behnke, council vice president. We dont want what Winamac has.
Mason said, I think we could have some say in how it is to be done. We would be remiss if we didnt include it since it has been started.
Sage suggested Jeff Sheridan, town manager, check into what Argos has in the way of town wide trash pick up.
The council asked Sheridan to check out different companies and see what can be offered to the town in the way of town wide trash pick up.
Sheridan said he would and get back to the council.
