Crown is dream come true

By Gloria Reed

Culver Mary Lee knows perseverance pays off.

Lee was crowned Friday night as Miss Maxinkuckee 2002 and is looking forward to spreading goodwill and a positive image of Culver for the next year.

I was just happy to get first runner up twice, Lee said. After awhile I just moved up.

Lee, 18, is a senior at Culver Community Sr. High School. Lee was one of nine children competing with her sister, Lily, in Fridays competition. No animosity was found among the sisters.

It was fun being in this together, Mary said. Today we did each others hair. Its kind of fun playing dress up.

In fact, Lily put the makeup on Mary to make sure it was just right.

I have enjoyed being in the contest every year, Mary said. It gives a girl self confidence to be in a beauty pageant. It gives you confidence to change into an evening gown (after being in a swimsuit) and then to stand in front of everybody.

Naturally, Mary is pleased with winning.

Im excited, she said. Its like a dream come true.

Being in the pageant isnt as easy as it appears, according to Mary.

At first I was nervous and shaky, she said. But then she found her place and won the crown.

Mary begins her duties as Miss Maxinkuckee 2002 immediately.

Ill be in parades such as the Blueberry parade and Cathy Reinhold asked me to help with the CCYC (Culver Community Youth Center) fundraiser next week.

Mary is the daughter of Teri Lee of Culver and David Lee of Chicago. She plans to attend the University of Indianapolis to play soccer and study to become a physical therapist.

Other winners in the Miss Maxinkuckee 2002 pageant are:

 Miss Congeniality - Madeline Hissong.

Best Swimwear Competition - Emily Wentzel.

Best Formal Wear Competition - Desiree Rhinehart.

 Most Sponsors - Desiree Rhinehart.

 First Place - Jaime Conley.

 Second Place - Martha Davis.

Miss Max 2002 - Mary Kaye Lee.

Tabulators for the pageant were Amy Bonine and Cindy Riester.
