by Barb Keiser

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair kicked off Friday morning, July 19, and by the weekends end, Wa-Nee participants had already brought home their share of the winnings, earning four of the top honors bestowed at the annual event.

Mary Egging, 17, daughter of Bert and Deb Egging, Etna Green, and a senior at NorthWood High School, was crowned fair queen Friday, and is presiding over a variety of fair events throughout this week.

She competed in a field of 50 contestants for the top honors, which include a $1,000 scholarship and airline tickets to any location of her choice in the continental United States. Karla Yoder, Nappanee, finished in the second runner-up position.

Judging included formal and professional outfits and judges interviews. They were also judged on their response to questions presented to them by last years fair queen, Laura Harris. Eggings responded to the question What prompted you to compete for fair queen.

In her response, she stated that she has always looked up to the past fair queens, and had dreamed of being on this stage since I was a little girl. It was her first entry into the contest. She is a nine-year member of the Dairy, Dairy Feeder, Calf, Swine and Motivators Clubs. She remarked that I believe society would be better if everyone experienced 4-H.

Egging, who represents Farm Bureau Insurance, stated that other interests include sewing, exercising, cooking, photography and Bible study. She is an employee of Amish Acres, Nappanee. Her high school involvements include National Honor Society, Prom Club and Student Council, and she is a basketball, track and volleyball athlete.

Ashley Stump, 6, daughter of Tim and Darlene Stump, Nappanee, earned top honors in the annual Little Miss and Little Mister Contest at the fair. Participants competed in dance, judges interviews and personality. Ashleys awards included a U.S. Savings Bond.

The NorthWood High School varsity cheerleaders earned the top spot in Fridays annual cheerleading competition. Members of the squad are Chelsea Hahn, Savannah Whitmer, Kelsie Sheets, Stacy Hughes, Allison Reynolds, Heather Casteel, Kylie Callander Carrie Heake, Jenna Reaker, Kara Hill, Katrina Deisch, Brenda Metz and Amber Bricker.

Also bringing recognition to the community is Julia Bauman, who was crowned Senior Fair Queen on Friday morning, receiving a crown and purple sash, as well as a bowl made of maple wood, which, she was told, is a symbol of service.

Bauman, who won her title over five other contestants, has served both the Union Township 4-H Club and the 4-H Corporation. She is a member of the Nappanee Missionary Church, Sharing Citizens of Wakarusa, and is employed part-time at Dwyer Instruments, Wakarusa. She also helps her husband in his business.

The senior queen is chosen in
