BOURBON A three-day celebration to dedicate the recently remodeled United Pentecostal Church is planned for the weekend of Aug. 9, 10, and 11.
The church is throwing open the doors to a community open house at 7 p.m. Friday with a one hour Singspiration service. Christian mime Rev. Terry Vik will give a drama presentation at all service during the weekend and the UPC Choir will perform during the open house.
At 2 p.m. Saturday Vik will perform again during the dedication service. Rev. Paul Mooney will be the guest speaker. A special offering for the local building fund will be received during this service.
At 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Revival Services will round out the weekend.
The UPC has Bourbon history that stretches over 77 years.
In 1925 ground was broken for the first church building for the local congregation at the corner of North and Bourbon Streets.
Subsequent generations have built on to the original foundation expanding as the ministry of the congregation grew.
In 1945, two Sunday School classrooms were added.
In 1975, a large remodeling project was completed with the addition of a three story education wing that included more classrooms, offices and an apartment for visiting evangelists and missionaries and a renovated sanctuary.
Last July, the growing congregation broke ground for the addition which houses a large auditorium, offices, additional restrooms, a new nursery, large cloakrooms, and a roomy entryway in just under 10,000 square feet.
New heating and cooling units were added. The main entrance was moved to the northwest off the expanded parking lot. Pastor Mark Cottrill and his wife, Jane, were involved in the last two building projects. In 1976 they were serving the local church as assistant pastor, youth leaders, and teen class teachers. From Bourbon they were called to pioneer a church in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1980. They served there five years and saw the church grow to more than 60 people. The Cottrills were called back to Bourbon where they have seen the attendance double to 160 in 18 years.
Cottrill points out a world map in the entry bedecked with photos of missionaries supported by the church. Seven couples have been called from the local church since 1985 to go into foreign ministry, church planting and child evangelism.
Four adjoining properties have been purchased in recent years in preparation for the new wing. A second parking lot on was built on the site of the former Dairy Queen in anticipation of church growth.
The remodeling of the church building will accommodate another doubling of the church.
