Patriotic fireworks set for Sept. 11

BREMEN Jeff Dietrich knew he needed to do something to remember all the people who died as a result of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
On that tragic day in U.S. history, terrorists hi-jacked a group of planes and slammed them into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Another jet crashed in a field near Pittsburgh after the passengers took control of the aircraft from the terrorists.
To honor those people and the countless police officers and firefighters who spent months at ground zero after the attack, Dietrich has decided to put on a fireworks display.
I knew I needed to do something meaningful, Dietrich said. Something everyone can take part in and enjoy. So this will be a tribute on the evening of Sept. 11.
Dietrich said he does fireworks shows professionally as a hobby.
The display will be called Patriots Thunder.
Dietrich has handed out flyers that state the display is: A fireworks tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Services, police and fire departments across the nation, as well as the victims of the 2001 terrorists attacks.
Patriots Thunder will be produced by Skypainter Fireworks in association with the Bremen VFW Post #8972.
They will have an Honor Guard ceremony prior to the fireworks display, Dietrich added.
While putting together the plans for the event Dietrich sought financial assistance from the Town of Bremen.
The town council gave its moral support, but could not offer any money for the display.
It sounds worthwhile, but financially, we would have a problem, Bremen Town Council President Jim Brown told Dietrich at a recent meeting. Weve got a red tape problem as far as tax dollars.
Dietrich plans to solicit local businesses, industries and organizations for financial support. He said the cost of the fireworks will be just over $3,000.
Dietrich has obtained the necessary permits from the fire department and is insured with a $5 million liability policy.
The display will be at Dietrichs residence which is 500-600 feet behind the Bremen High School football field.
It will only be a 10 to 15 minute display, but it will be awesome, he added.
The council agreed to draft a resolution stating the towns moral support of the endeavor.
With or without financial assistance Dietrich has been determined from day one to put together the display.
If it rains on Sept. 11, the display will be the following Saturday.
Businesses or individuals wishing to make a contribution in support of Patriots Thunder may contact Dietrich at 574-209-3469.
