No action taken on humane society pact

By Mindy Abel

The Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety reviewed the 2003 agreement with the Elkhart County Humane Society last Monday.

Paul Dean, secretary of the humane society is requesting $26,840, which is $4 per head for the population over 21 years of age for animal service. The rate has been raised from $5,500, which is what is budgeted.

The board is going to see how much work is done in Nappanee through the humane society and reevaluate the numbers and have someone come in to tell how the program works. The board took no action on the agreement.

Fire Chief Brian Huff updated the board on the ladder truck, which will not be here until the end of August, as the engineers are still working on the tanks.

In other business, EMS Director Jim Sumpter received approval to give Connie Stouder, Tye Chupp and Eric Thornton their 180 day pay raise to $13, which was effective Monday, July 22. He also promoted Aaron Mowry from driver to basic life support, as he has received his state certification. Nathan Kemp was also approved to become a driver effective on Monday, July 22.

Mayor Larry Thompson met with GAI Consultants concerning the depot and received information that CSX has a right of entry in which the application fee is $750. The board approved it rather than fighting it and delaying the project.

The board will meet on Monday, Aug. 12, at 3:30p.m., in the Nappanee Municipal Building, W. Lincoln St. Meetings are open to the public.
