CANADOHTA LAKE, Bloomfield Township Despite temperatures that have been arching up into the 40s, rather than dipping below zero, the annual ice fishing tournament is scheduled for this weekend.

Theres 10 inches of ice out there, said Jerry Van Tassel, general chairman and organizer of the event. It will take a lot of warm days to melt the ice. Its supposed to get colder by the end of the week.

This is the 15th year for the tournament, which last winter drew about 250 participants not only from around the state, but from all over the country. One individual traveled from Texas to enjoy the tourney, which is sponsored by the Canadohta Lake Business Association (CLBA). Last year a Titusville resident, Jeff Roberts of Route 8, took first place with a 27-inch Northern Pike. His prize catch weighed over four pounds.

But whether the weather is cold, or whether the weather is hot, there will be fish to catch. On Saturday, I caught a nice muskie at the lake, 38 inches long, said Van Tassel. There are muskies there that are 60 inches long. Thats not a fish tale, thats from the fish commission.

Van Tassel, owner of Timberland Bait Shop along Dutch Hill Road at Canadohta Lake, said so far close to 200 entries for the event have been received. Again, the tournament will be headquarted at Sally on the Lake, where the fish can be taken to be measured. Van Tassel said there also will be a big bon fire outside of Sallys for participants on Saturday night.

Last year, the tournament was held on the first weekend of February. But because of the Super Bowl, officials decided to move the event up a week later in the month, Van Tassel said. He said on Sunday at 6 p.m. the three tournament winners will be crowned. We usually give them a power ice auger, said Van Tassel, but this year we will let the winners decide what they want.

Entries still are being accepted, right up until and during the weekend. You can enter on the day of the contest, said Van Tassel. You could win during the last hour.
