Meadville Area Sports Banquet will feature volleyball tomorrow
By Matthew Digiacomo

MEADVILLE Thursday is usually reserved for high school basketball at this time of year.

Tomorrow, however, is going to be overrun by volleyball.

The Meadville Area Sports Banquet, to be held at the Days Inn at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30), will be honoring several volleyball players this year. Matt Werle (Male Scholastic Athlete), Meghan McMunigle (Female Scholastic Athlete), Carli Dale (Sportsperson of the Year) and the entire Cochranton girls team (Team Achievement) will be honored.

Just look at the honorees, said MASB Co-Chariman Lon Wilson. Matt Werle and Meghan McMunigle play a lot of sports, but volleyball is their No. 1 interest. Carli Dale was the Division III player of the year. And dont forget Cochranton. It was certainly a good volleyball year.

In fact, it was a pretty good sports year in general.

The Meadville Senior League baseball squad (Team Achievement) won a state title. Lynn Jones, who will join his brother, Darryl, as Hall of Fame honorees, won a World Series championship with the Boston Red Sox. And dont forget those that donated to youth programs to help make them possible. Businesses like Saegertown Manufacturing Corp. (Richard Colonel Lang Corporate Partnership Award) and individuals such as Park Golf Course owners Karin Unger and Jodi Guerrini (Women of the Year) and Mike Hogan (Community Sports Service Award).

With the good there is also bad, or in this case, the sad.

Three coaches will be honored for their longtime service to athletics in the area Chuck Jones (Meadville boys basketball), Dan McCullough (Linesville football) and Rick Chesko (Linesville girls basketball and softball). All three recently stepped down.

With the times, the banquet has been swinging more to recognize locals for their accomplishments, said Charlie Anderson, who has been a MASB board member since 1971. I think everybody enjoys that. There are still a lot people who want to know who is coming in.

But its a charity event with the money going to youth related sports activities, and it always has been.

As for who is coming, there are plenty of guest speakers to make the night worth while.

Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh football and basketball announcer Bill Hillgrove will once again be master of ceremonies and bring with him longtime friend and color commentator Dick Groat, a former Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop. Former Steelers Craig Wolfley, Robin Cole and Edmund Nelson will also make the trip, as well as former Steelers and Browns running back Charlie Scales.

There may also be a curveball or two.

Last year we did something special for Jack (Hyland, who was a Hall of Fame inductee last year), Wilson said. We also received a special letter from Arnold Palmer to Jim Duratz (last years Man of the Year), which we read during the banquet. We did receive a letter this year for one of the honorees, but I am not going to say who it is. That will be a surprise for him and all who attend.

This funds raised at this years banquet will be donated to the Meadville Area Recreation Complex for the reconstruction of their on site community tennis courts. Tickets can be purchased at Fine Print (287 Chestnut St.), Kentucky Fried Chicken (Park Ave. Plaza), Mercer County State Bank (Route 322), the Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce (211 Chestnut St.), and Seymour Ducks (Route 18, Conneaut Lake).

I think it is going to be a sell-out, Anderson said. There arent many tickets left.

Those that remain will be available at the door, although the quantity is expected to be limited.
