A Pleasant return
by Holly Matthews

Steve and Cindy Smith accepted thank yous and best wishes Thursday from many Hilltop and area residents arriving to shop at the Pleasantville Market.

The Smiths have reopened the grocery store which was closed by previous owners last year.

The couple from Bemis Point, N.Y., however, are no strangers to Pleasantville. They owned the market which was operated as Main Street Foods for a time in the 1990s prior to selling it in 2000. It was later known as Shur Save.

The renovated Pleasantville Market reopened Thursday to enthusiastic response from customers.

One of those customers was Harold Anthony, a Second Street resident. You better believe Im glad to see the store open again, Anthony said as he shook Steve Smiths hand and welcomed him back to the borough.

Anthony explained that he has found it quite an inconvenience to have to travel into Titusville to shop every time he and his wife need something. Its been especially inconvenient when we want just a few items, he said.

Also pleased to see the store back in business was Margaret Eck, who said she lives about four miles from the borough. Im very happy, Eck remarked as her groceries were being checked out by clerk Becky Presto.

The Smiths said the feedback from customers on opening day had been very positive. We believe there is a need for a market in Pleasantville. We understand it will be a challenge to meet the needs of the customers, and we intend to work hard to earn their business, Smith said.

Cindy Smith said the store has been refurbished and brightened, including new paint and lights. The Smiths have done the majority of the work themselves. We used a lot of elbow grease, Cindy said with a laugh.

Smith said Pleasantville Market is a full-service grocery store, offering fresh cut meats, fresh produce, doughnuts, fresh baked pies and deli items including subs, salads, hot foods, cold cuts and cheeses.

Cindy Smith added that the market features Green Mountain specialty coffees from Vermont. The coffee can be purchased by the cup or ground for use at home.

Smith said they have hired 14 local residents to staff the store. The Smiths will be running the business as owners. He also thanked the many people who applied for work at the store in response to advertisements. Over 100 applications were received.

The stores supplier will be Olean Wholesale, a grocery co-op from which the Smiths purchase their stores stock. The store will feature Shur Fine brand as well as a good selection of national brands.

Pleasantville Market also will have Shur Saver discounts as they are offered. Smith said the discounts are offered on hundreds of items on a rotating basis. We pass the savings on to our customers, Smith said.

There is carry out service on request, Visa and Master Card purchases are accepted and food stamps are processed. We want to provide friendly customer service, Smith emphasized.

The Smiths have added a DVD video rental program. The DVDs can be found at the front of the market.

The store also has ice for sale and a propane exchange outside the building.

The store hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

I just wanted to drop a 'thank you' to Mr. and Mrs. Smith for reopening the Pleasantville Market. I really like to see people supporting our own local store. I know my father was a very firm beliver in supporting your very own local store, and I am as well. I know as the Pleasantville store has been up and running since the mid '90s. There have been four different people in running the store, in which this is the Smiths second time running the store. I know I have heard different comments that the Smiths have done a very good job in keeping our store going. I know for myself that as long as the surrounding people will support the store, we will have a store. All I am trying to say is thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, for giving me my own local store to shop in again.

What great news!! People in the area much be delighted to have their store back. It will be of help to our family as we pass through to West Hickory. Best of luck to the Smiths, and thank you.
