Ten Rocket wrestlers ready for start of D-10 tourney today
By Ed Topoleski

With team numbers low, Mo Burns focus for his wrestlers this season was on individual improvement. Today and tomorrow at McDowell High School, Burns and co. will see first-hand just how far theyve come.

The high school postseason is here as the Rockets and 11 other District 10 Triple-A schools begin the district wrestling tournament at 4:30 p.m. today.

Titusville has 10 wrestlers competing in the tournament.

At 103-pounds, junior David Pondel received the highest seeding of all the Rockets. Pondel, the No. 2 seed in his class, will face Erie Centrals Zach Zimmerman in the quarterfinals today.

You never know whats going to happen going into a seeding meeting, Burns said from his home Thursday night. But (David Pondels) sitting pretty good, and its all up to him now. And thats not just for him. That goes for everyone else.

The Rest of the Rockets, however, will perhaps have a tougher road to the finals than Pondel.

Four Rockets will have to wrestle preliminary bouts today. The winners of the preliminary bouts will be rewarded with a match against each weight class No. 1 seed.

The four Rockets wrestling preliminary bouts include: Ben Rapp (125), Zach Hamilton (135), Joe Anderson (140) and Kurt Ledebur (215).

Burns, however, downplayed the possibility of having four wrestlers having to go against No. 1s so early.

We kinda knew that was gonna happen, Burns said. But I kinda like to go against a good kid first. Youre gonna have to wrestle a No. 1 kid anyway, so you might as well just get it over with.

I couldnt have been happier (with how the seedings turned out). Looking at the pairings with some of the records our kids had, I dont think I could have put them in better positions myself.

With a No. 3 seed, Shane Klingler (160) holds Titusvilles second best pairing in the tournament. He will battle General McLanes Clay Steadman in the quarterfinals today.

Joe Snyder (145) and Travis Chappel (275) earned No. 4 spots in their weight classes. Snyder will get the winner of Matt Morlan (Conneaut Lake) vs. Matt Ahrens (Erie Central) in the quarters while Chappel is penciled to face Warrens Kyfer Rumburd.

Rockets Tim Beers (119) and Ben Anderson (130) were paired with the No. 2 wrestlers in their weight classes.

While the tournament presents the Rockets with an opportunity to show far they have come as individuals this season, it is important to remember that five of the 10 Rockets competing are just freshmen.

To Burns, today is just another step along the way in building a group of youngsters that continue to show a lot of promise.

My goal is just to go up there and wrestle better than they did all year long, said Burns. As a coach, you want your kids to peak (at this time of the year).

Just go wrestle and have fun, thats what I told them all. Dont get yourself all wound up and worked up just because its districts. Whether they take that advice, only time will tell.

NOTE: Only the top three wrestlers in each weight class will move on to next weekends regional tournament.
