Saga of troubled CLP continues
by Jane Smith

A court date has been set for Travaglini Enterprises Inc. of Meadville to argue why a public hearing should be conducted for prospective companies wishing to lease the Beach Club and Down Under Bar at Conneaut Lake Park.

Crawford County Court of Common Pleas Judge Anthony Vardaro has set one hour Thursday at 2:30 p.m. for the company to present testimony and argument about the matter.

Travaglini Enterprises, headquartered in Meadville, owns and operates various business entities in the area, including Perkins Family Restaurant and Chovys Restaurant.

A week after Vardaro had granted permission for the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park Inc. to lease the Beach Club and Down Under to Conneaut Concessions, a petition was filed by Attorney William Jorden on behalf of Travaglini. In his petition, he asked the court to schedule a public hearing on whether there were others who would offer more favorable leases to the Trustees.

In his ruling issued Thursday, Vardaro said at the time of the hearing last month no other party or attorney sought attention of the court to indicate that offers other than those being considered were available. He pointed out that Jorden was one of the people in attendance at the court hearing.

Vardaro also noted that the Trustees and the court-appointed manager also will have the opportunity to present testimony and argument about their positions on the matter. In addition, any other parties to the litigation will be heard briefly, if they so desire.

The litigation in question is a lawsuit filed by Dana Watson versus the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park in 1998 after the then-board of Trustees entered into an agreement with former park owner and operator Gary Harris about claims of ownership of rides and land at the park. In return for the agreement, Harris provided assistance to allow the park to open in 1997.

Vardaro said he wanted to move quickly since the issue it appears Travaglini wants the court to address could potentially cause major disruption to the business of the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park.

He noted that at the February hearing, the Trustees said the lease for the Beach Club and Down Under Bar had to be signed by Feb. 15 to allow Conneaut Concessions to line up talent for programs at the club.

That lease has been signed and Conneaut Concessions, a group comprised of Frank Flannigan of Pittsburgh and Jack Hunter of Meadville, has already started doing renovations at the Beach Club, according to Don Kaltenbaugh, chief executive officer of CLP.
