John Litzinger, 82

John Clayton Litzinger, 82, of Titusville, RD 2, died at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare of Meadville, where he was admitted the day prior.

Mr. Litzinger was born April 18, 1922, in Southwest Township, Warren County, the son of the late John L. and Clara Peiffer Litzinger.

He was graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1939.

He married Frances Fogle Litzinger on Feb. 14, 1940 in Franklin.

Mr. Litzinger was a veteran of World War II, having been inducted into the U.S. Army Feb. 9, 1944, at Erie. He served with the Army Air Corps and received the American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Litzinger was discharged April 12, 1946, at Ft. George Meade, Md., with the rank of corporal.

He was a member of Cleo J. Ross American Legion Post 368 and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Despite his occasional statements to the contrary, he was a very good father and taught his sons more than he knew. He cared more for his family and friends than he let on. He loved hunting in the deep wood and was an excellent shot, though he later came to regret having killed animals. He was a good poker player. On balance, he probably lost more than he won, but he enjoyed the process. He remembered the names and hometowns of everyone he served with during World War II.

He probably should have been an artist or a writer, but he thought it better to make sure his family had food regularly, so he was a mill worker, a funeral home assistant, an occasional carpenter and a salesman, among other occupations. When he retired, he vowed never to wear a tie again. He loved dogs and his family hopes hes now reunited with his favorites, including Bobby, a legendary mutt of remarkable ability.

One of his favorite authors was Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote: Home is the sailor, home from sea; And the hunter home from the hill.

He is, at last, home.

Survivors include his wife of Titusville; two sons, John E. Litzinger and his wife Linda of Meadville and Samuel M. Litzinger and his wife Laura King of Alexandria, Va.; two grandsons, Michael Litzinger and his wife Sadie of Indiana and Mark Litzinger of Meadville; a great-grandson, Clayton Michael Litzinger; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Litzinger, who died in infancy, and a sister, Phyllis Vroman.

No public calling hours will be observed. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family by the Rev. Joseph Kosarek, chaplain for Hospice of Crawford County.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 310 N. Monroe St., Titusville, Pa., 16354.

Arrangements are under the direction of Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, Inc.

Reader Condolences

Rev. David Duquette (3/14/2005)
I fondly remember Litz's and I's chats over the years. His keen mind and unquenchable thirst for justice were matched by the moral courage to ask difficult questions and demand serious answers. May rest in peace.

Beverly Bangs (3/10/2026)
I worked with John (and Sam) at WTIV a lifetime ago. I always enjoyed listening to his stories and have wondered about him over the years. He was quite a character and will be missed. My deepest sympathies to the family.
