ALLTEL to expand phone, cable services

Special to The Herald
It may be tougher to distinguish between area telephone and cable television companies later this year.
ALLTEL, the Meadville areas telephone provider, plans to offer satellite TV service starting this summer, while Armstrong, the areas cable television provider, will offer phone service this fall.
ALLTEL will offer Dish Network satellite TV service this summer to its residential telephone customers in the 15 states, including Pennsylvania, where it has wirelines. Customers will contact ALLTEL to order the TV service and schedule installation of a satellite dish on their home, spokeswoman Erin Ascione said.
It will be part of a discounted bundle of services on a single bill provided by ALLTEL, but specific pricing plans and promotional offers wont be announced until later this summer, she said.
The company also offers wireless telephone as well as standard dial-up and high-speed DSL (digital subscriber line) Internet services.
Its not surprising, Ike Mutlu, Armstrongs Meadville general manager, said of ALLTEL offering TV service. Lots of telephone companies are looking at that.
Mutlu said the cable television firm has a brand-new physical plant in its central Crawford County area that serves Meadville, Conneaut Lake, Saegertown and Cochranton areas.
It also offers broadband high-speed Internet services.
Armstrong also is preparing to launch its own telephone service this fall.
There are no details to release yet, Mutlu said. We still have to work out the details.
ALLTEL has more than 13 million total customers in 26 states while Armstrong, with headquarters in Butler, has more than 200,000 customers in five states.
