Rockets open season 2-0
Herald staff reports
Its still early in the season, but through two meets the Rocket tennis team is still perfect.
The Rockets swept Oil City Friday afternoon, 5-0, for their second sweep in as many opportunities.
The win, however, was certainly well earned as three matches required a third set.
They were pretty hard fought (matches), Titusville coach Tom Bodamer said. It was one of those matches that could have gone either way. As it turned out, fortunately, we came out on top.
At No. 1 singles, Toby Cressman was one of the Rockets that needed an extra frame to earn the W. He defeated Adam Gill 6-2 in the first game before losing the second, 5-7. In a back-and-forth third frame, Cressman came out on top, 7-5.
Ben Kristobak won the No. 2 singles spot in two games, 6-3, 6-1. But No. 3 player Greg Dupree needed an extra set to finish off Jirat Phannachet, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
In doubles action, Rockets Leoni Siliga and Casey Childers teamed up to defeat Ryan Friebhaver and Andrew Kozek, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles team of Jeff Ledebur and Jesse Wig won, 6-2, 6-2.
The Rockets will be back in action Monday when they travel to Meadville to face the Bulldogs.
