$8.25 million budget approved; Will payroll tax bail out county?
By JANIE SLAVEN Record Staff Writer
WHITLEY CITY Mc-Creary County Fiscal Court met in special session Wednesday to approve the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1. In presenting the county budget to magistrates, Judge-Executive Blaine Phillips commended County Treasurer Donna Ross, Finance Officer Sue Kidd and Deputy Judge Tony Jones for their work on the draft which balanced at $8,250,741.30. This years budget comes in nearly $3 million short of last years but Judge Phillips explained that the difference is due to grants the county received last year for infrastructure (particularly water and sewer lines). Provided finances can hold out until July 1, Judge Phillips said the countys future looks brighter than it has in some time. The budget was much easier to do with the occupational tax, Judge Phillips said. I think we have some breathing room.

Alvin Emerson Davis (7/11/2025) This one was born at "Blue Heron", and delivered by Dr. Cooper(who also delivered my Mom and Dad-not at the same time of course. This one started in 1948--a long time ago born in America. The point is, that some things that are not clear at present will find out that they are for everybody or that everbody has been fleeced'. Jeff (5/31/2004) I'm glad I no longer live in the county because there is no money to be made there and what little the people do make is taxed to death. Judge Phillips said "now we have some breathing room", well I guess so, I wished when I needed money all I had to was take it from the poor people who elected me. The easiest way to solve the money problem, would be to stop spending it, why don't you guys find some cuts before you ask for more money from the people, wait you didn't ask them, you just took it. This should have been on the ballot, you know why it wasn't, it wouldn't have passed. Does this story sound like Robin Hood? The signs coming into the county should read,,,,,WELCOME TO MC CREARY COUNTY, WHERE WE KEEP THE POOR PEOPLE DOWN
Mr D (5/31/2004) Didnt the county govt promise the taxpayers that no payroll raises will come from the payroll tax? A cost of living allowance sounds like a payraise too me. Hey Judge and Magistrates, Guess what? I lost my cost of living allowance to your payroll tax.
