Mother pleas not guilty to endangering children
By JANIE SLAVEN Record Staff Writer
WHITLEY CITY The mother accused of leaving her children in a make-shift camp was arraigned last Wednesday morning in McCreary District Court. Lisa Faye Abner, 39, of Pontiac, MI, pleaded not guilty to seven counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Minor before McCreary District Judge Dan Ballou. Constable Milford Creekmore II filed the charges following the August 18 discovery of 11 children and one woman camping off Jellico Creek Road. Abner is mother to seven of those children, as well as three more that were taken into custody when she and other family members returned to the campsite the next day. She has said that the family was in the area camping but she had to return to Pontiac to get medication for two of the children. Her brothers girlfriend, 27-year-old Jennifer Turcotte, was left with 11 children, a disputed amount of food and no transportation. For now, Abner cannot see her minor children without supervision. She is set to stand trial in McCreary County on Nov. 17.

Jonathan Hearld (9/10/2026) To Unsigned poster:Somehow I don't believe that you would turn your own children over to the state.Your own children, your own flesh and blood. One day it might be you in the headlines, and be in this situation.People who say "never" are the ones who wind up "doing" such things.Let's say you lose your home by fire or by tornado, and you have no other place to go,what will you do? it's very easy to condemn someone without us being in their shoes.Until we ourselves have been there,we have no right whatsoever to condemn this woman.
(9/8/2026) Jonathan; I understand where you are comming from I really do. However I am a mother, and I would turn my children over to the state myself, before I would leave them without the proper amount of food they needed.
Jonathan Hearld (9/8/2026) Do the right thing and free this woman as well as free her children and let this family be a family once again.
