Railways to Trailways; New link to Barren Fork Coal Camp
By JANIE SLAVEN
Record Staff Writer

BARREN FORK Both residents and tourists alike will soon be able to enjoy a new recreational trail.
The Governors Office for Local Development (GOLD) has awarded the Daniel Boone National Forest a $24,495.60 Recreational Trail grant to convert an existing auto road and railroad bed into a .7-mile asphalt trail at the Barren Fork Coal Camp.
GOLD Division of Grants Director Myralee Smith-Crowley presented a check to Stearns District Ranger Fred Noack yesterday at the Barren Fork picnic shelter with McCreary County Judge-Executive Blaine Phillips also in attendance.
The trail, accessible for disabled and senior citizens, can be used for walking, jogging or hiking. Signs, maps and other visual aids will be used to interpret the history of the coal camp.
Noack noted that the Barren Fork Camp was in operation from the 1880s to the 1930s and was actually moved once.
