Oh Brother!: Siblings finger each other in King murder

WHITLEY CITY � The five defendants accused in the murder of 65-year-old Morris Ray King just over two weeks ago stood in McCreary District Court Wednesday morning to hear the evidence against them.
   Harold Dean King, 62; his sons Ricky Dale Neal (aka King), 32, and Rocky D. King, 29; Danny Bryant, 47; and Kimberlly Dalton, 31; appeared for a preliminary hearing before Judge Dan Ballou.
   A preliminary hearing is used to determine if there is probable cause that a defendant has committed a crime. County Attorney Phil Chaney called only one witness to outline the evidence, Kentucky State Police Detective Billy Correll.
   Det. Correll testified that all five defendants, when interviewed, admitted to being present as the crime was carried out but tended to point fingers at each other when it came time to determine who shot Morris King (who is not related to any of the defendants).
   According to Correll�s testimony, the drama began at the Wooden Nickel Tavern in Winfield the night of December 15. Morris King was there alone while Harold King was drinking with his two sons and Danny Bryant. Though she arrived at the bar with someone else, Dalton ended up with Rocky King. However, Dalton did speak with Morris King, who bought drinks for at least some of the defendants and other patrons of the bar.
   When Morris King started to leave, the defendants went out to the parking lot as well. Another Wooden Nickel customer, Mark Wilson � concerned about Morris King � followed the group outside where he found Rick Neal in the passenger seat of Morris King�s Ford Explorer trying to get a ride home. When Wilson offered to drive Neal home, Neal got into his father�s Saturn with the other four and they left the bar.
   Wilson told Correll that he tried to warn Morris King, who in turn showed the man a gun he had in the SUV. Morris then leaves.
   In the meantime, the Saturn has pulled over on US 27 in front of the Showboat, another tavern just north of the Wooden Nickel. When Morris King drives past, the group pulls out behind him � flashing the Saturn�s lights in an attempt to get the Explorer to pull over.
   When Morris King does pull over, the events become murkier. The victim was taken to Murray Wilson Cemetery Road, where hunters found him the next morning slumped in the passenger seat of his own Explorer. He had been shot multiple times and his wallet was missing. No weapon was found at the scene.
   So who shot the Sloans Valley man?
   Correll testified that the defendants vary wildly in their accounts of the incident.
   Rocky King and Ricky Neal accused each other of pulling the trigger. However, Det. Correll noted that Neal�s statement �has changed 15-20 times.� The detective also testified that Neal�s allegation that his brother shot Morris King from the passenger side was �not consistent� with evidence found at the scene.
   Their father, Harold King, told authorities that Rocky shot Morris King and that Kimberlly returned from the body with $20 each for him and Danny Bryant. Correll testified that Harold King turned over $20 but that no other money was recovered.
   Kimberlly Dalton told authorities that she tried to get Morris King to leave. Denying any involvement in the robbery, Dalton said she only heard the shots. However, Dalton did lead authorities to a site on Lum Strunk Road where she threw the gun into the woods.
   At first, Bryant � whose hat was found inside the Explorer � told authorities that he was so drunk that he couldn�t remember anything. He later recounted Morris King had fired a shot which narrowly missed him. Both Ricky and Rocky struggled with the victim over the gun with Rick getting it away from him first. Rocky then took the gun and shot Morris King.
   Det. Correll concluded his testimony with preliminary autopsy results, stating that the victim died �just minutes� after the shooting. Correll also said investigators are seeking assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to search Marsh Creek, where Rocky King dumped the gun after recovering it from the woods.
   For the preliminary hearing, Rocky King and Kimberlly Dalton were represented by Carolyn Clark Cox. Jeff Hiller represented Harold King and Ricky Neal. Robert Norfleet represented Danny Bryant.
   The attorneys asked that bond be reduced for all the defendants. Cox asked that the murder charge against Dalton be amended as �there�s nothing to indicate that she pulled the trigger.�
   Hiller made a similar request that the charges against Harold King be amended to complicity �considering his age and cooperation� with authorities. Norfleet asked that both charges also be amended for Bryant.
   �When you intend to rob somebody, you live the consequences,� Chaney argued. �All of them could be guilty under Kentucky law.�
   �Clearly there is probable cause [against all the defendants],� Judge Ballou said in his ruling that the case should be presented to the grand jury.
   The judge declined to amend the charges or the bonds � saying that while bond is primarily intended to ensure a defendant�s appearance in court, it is also the court�s duty to ensure the safety of the community at large.
   Each suspect remains lodged at the McCreary County Jail under a $1 million cash bond. They are charged with murder and first-degree robbery.

Seems to me that everyone has forgotten that there is one more that is being charged with the same crime Kimberly Dalton. What has happened to her and the comments about this hag? No, no one wants to think that a woman is capable of comitting such a deadful crime, Well I think that you all need to check more into Kimberly Dalton. I would like to ask you all something Why are you all so certain that the men committed this crime and not the woman? What if all of the suspects were standing around planning on just robbing the man and out of the blue the woman gets he gun and shoots Mr. King you know as well as I that it could have happened and you also know that they men may not know who shot the innocent man and they are blaming each other cause they really dont know and they just assuming that the other has committed the crime. Dont you think that this could possibly have happened? Well I think that this should certainly be investgated alot more than just a little as it has been so far.

Tracy I don't think they were talking about your father as they spoke of this man putting children out being a son-in-law to your grandfather...There were two, Harold King and another. As far as your grandfather, everyone has proof and no one would listen then and no one will listen now. The law has allowed him to do it again. He will do it again too if they don't keep him. Nothing can be done about your grandfather, I think the point here is that the public and law see the coincidence in the two crimes that Harold King has been charged for. I agree with you, let your family go, he was around the wrong man at the wrong time as once again this same man is in jail again, for the same crime he commited years ago, the sad part of it is that he will take your family down with him if he can. I think everyone should look at the facts and not go by what you read in these comments. These comments are just heated discussions and no one knows what happened or what will happen. Everyone needs to chill out. If you really want to help your family on either side of the law, start with McCreary County Officials and the law in that county. I really wonder what the percentage is of the murders commmitted in McCreary County that never get solved.

I've read all of these statements and it just strikes me funny that the people that are trying to uphold these suspects keep saying your innocent until provin guilty, well I disagree, if you kill someone your guilty, and just because this small town police department cant solve this mystery and nobody is convicted does that mean their innocent?? Im sorry, you are wrong, and if you dont believe this read the Bible and you'll see. O J Simpson wasn't convicted either, and I supose he was innocent too, does that make any sense? The phrase innocent until proven guilty is used so that a person that is really innocent gets a fair trial through due process in a court of law, which our constitution provided us.. God doesn't need due process or a constitution, when you pull that trigger your guilty. My heart goes out to the victim, family and friends. I just want to say that not all people in Mccreary Co are uneducated, unskilled, poor, backwards ect.... I am a college graduate, with honor roll children, a good husband, income, vehicles, boat ect..... Those of you need to stay focused on the story here. If there has been a murder committed and not solved, and you loved that family member as much as you may claim, then take actions to find peace in your life, go to head of state, call unsolved mysteries, Vote for better law enforcement based on their qualifications and not because their friend or family. And just to inform the stereo type, you know the ones that are small minded and not adult enough to realize, we all here in McCreary Co. are not related. I'm fed up with the way some of you make all of us sound. I also agree that our law enf. here SUCKS... We need a better law enf. I also want to note also, That I to know the King Family ( The accused ). they have drunk and fit their entire life. I want to see this case and all others to be solved. I had two friends in that last few years that were murdered AND NEVER SOLVED. We as a community need to crack down on our law enf. They get good pay ( Judges, Lawyers,detectives and most local law ) to do their jobs and it seems as if they don't have a clue on how to do it. We can get on here everyday and smart off about whats not being done, but until we make a stand ourselves, it will never change. Surely to God that out of 5 people the police would be able to get the guilty one. I'm sure that 4 of them didn't just turn their heads while #5 pulled the trigger and if they did then the 4 should come forward and tell on the one who is guilty. In a situation like this, all should be tried for murder or at least complicity to commit murder and be given the maximum sentence that the law will allow. What person with a heart would take the rap for someone else in a trial as serious as this. It's not a joke to take the life of another individual and someone must pay weither it be 1 of the ROTTEN, HEARTLESS, COWARDS or all 5 of them. Just dig into these peoples past lives and see how evil they are. Do they have children? Where is their children, at home or in Foster Homes? How many times have the appeared before a judge for a crime or violation of the law? You write the story of your life for everyone else to read. Facts are facts, let the truth speak for the characters of these people. THEY ARE PURE EVIL. God will punish them when their judgement day is here and without a doubt he will send them all straight into the pits of hell. Pray for them all that they realize the error of their ways and repend of their sins before its to late. Pray for the innocent people that these people have taken prematurely out of this world and for the innocent children that they have brought into this world and neglected to be the parent they should have been. There is some very good people in the King family and it is ripping their hearts out. Please don't judge them by their families actions. I am a brother-in-law of the late Morris King. I am not judging without looking at the facts as reported by investigators. It seems to me that all facts point to robbery to commit murder. If not, why didn't some one in the group report Morris's death, and why did they take him to that secluded road?Or maybe one of them could've stopped the killing as a responsible dad, brother, or friend should've done!! I also was raised in McCreary County.

To the Citizens of McCreary County: We, the family of the those accused in the recent murder of Morris Ray King, would like to take this opportunity to speak out to the communtiy and citizens of McCreary County. First and most importantly we would like to send our most deepest and sincere regrets to the family of Morris King. We are so sorry for the loss of your loved one and we pray that God surround you with comfort, strength, and love, now and always. To all who read this: We, the family of the accused want the public to know that we too are in a state of shock. We were not present when this crime took place, therefore, we are unaware of exactly what transpired the dreadful night that Morris King lost his life. There are only those present at the scene, and God above who know the true facts in the crime. We would all like to thank that our family members accused in relation to this crime could not be capable of commiting such an act, however, we are aware that at least one person involved is indeed guilty of taking an innocent man's life. We are not asking anyone to overlook the facts, we are merely seeking forgiveness for the involvement of our family members, and requesting that our entire family not be judged in relation to this incident. We truly do not believe that the murder of Morris King was planned. We believe that those involved planned to only rob Mr. King and the robbery turned deadly. UNBELEIVEABLE: I have read the comments,how wonder,kind.helpful,great friend these 5 people( I use the word people losely more like scum) If you are such great people -you do not ROB OR MURDER any one. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER..THEY ALL WERE THERE. I know Morris King family loved him. NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO PLAY GOD AND KILL ANYONE. Thank God I'm not from McCreary County..To think you buy someone a drink and that gives you the right to rob and kill. For Tonya Bryant in Texas, and to all of the Bryants that I am still a part of their family I do apologize for anything that I have said or done to offend you. Right is right & wrong is wrong. I too believe that God above will handle all of this in the end run so I am truly sorry for the family of Morris King and the others who have lost family in McCreary County Kentucky. I know the toll it has taken on this side of the Bryant family as David almost lost his mind over the death of his father but that never stopped him from loving his family. All of it.

I'm tired of reading and listening to your comments that has been brought to my attention as nothing but lies. Just to let you know that your guess was wrong,about the person who commented on your statements that was made. ITS HER DAUGHTER! My mother,grandmother, you, your children nor I have no business commenting about things that happened 30-35 years ago. This is going to stop one way or another. This site is for people to comment on the murder that happened DEC 2005. Thanks for informing us that your children hasnt been arrested for a crime, thats good, bbut neither have I nor my mother. Weather a mother raises her own children or raises them in a bad enviroment, its not the mother or the fathers fault that the children make mistakes in life. Everyone makes them even you and I. Just because a child kills someone doesnt mean that its the parents fault. Why are you stressing to tell us that you and your children has an education, I have an education and a damn good one if its any concern of yours. If you dislike my grandmother so much why dont you call her and tell her the FACTS as you call them yourself. I understand that you have never liked my grandmother (I dont know why and dont want to know its none of by buisness) and you have all had a bad thing to say about McCreary Co Just because someone is from McCreary Co doesnt mean that they do not have an education, a nice home, a good paying job (theres counties and states that are close and people such as myself drive it everyday to work) and also great families and good childhood lives. I lived in Whitley City for a little over a year and I was glad to be moved away. I was robbed, cheated and lied to. My son, 6 at the time, found 3 hypadermic needles in the edge of our yard and thought he had found a toy. I called the sherrif's dept. and was told they would look into it. I never heard anything more. I have a good idea who they belonged to and the person was confirmed to have hep c and rumored to be HIV positive. I think a lot of the crime in this county is due to drugs but what do you do? In my opinion, most of the cops in McCreary county make money from the drugs and you don't know who to trust. I know a lot of people who feel this way and are afraid to report drugs and other criminal activity. Unfortunately, I am seeing firsthand the effects of oxycontin addiction and just what someone will do to get the next pill. My sister is hooked badly. She has lost everything she had, including one child, and still lives only for the drug. She steals and cons people for her drug. At one time, she was a well respected member of the community. I wait daily for the call that she has overdosed or been killed by a drug dealer. DRUGS HURT! I cannot help but think that this murder was done to support a drug habit. Maybe being nice and buying a round of drinks can be DEADLY!

morris king was a good man. he never hesitated to help if needed. he was also a generous man. from what i have read that generosity was acceped by the SCUM who took his life so brutally. i hope the supects get convicted. i hope they are sentenced to death.that's what they deserve.i curse them to spend eternity in HELL. they robbed his family of his love here on earth.but love is forever so we will love and honor his memory as long as we live.

Donna what you heard was right, my brother was murered in McCreary County in 2003, the person/people who did it, got away with it. It took the detective almost 2 1/2 years to tell us it was an accident, thats bull.

my uncle was murdwer in mccreary county also and the whole thing was covered up from the police deptartment even the corner..i guess money goes far when u murder someone...so no one will ever get the right punishment for murder in this small town

I am a firm believer in forgiving others, however, I also know that you reap what you sow in most cases unless God Almighty shows you his wonderful mercy. God wasn't joking when he said, " Thou Shalt Not Kill" If these people did indeed ruthlessly kill this man then everyone of them should drop to their knees and ask for God's forgiveness. It also blows my mind to think that a person's life could be so shamelessly taken away over a little bit of money, and I don't care if the man would have had a million dollars on him there is absolutely no excuse that will ever be good enough for this gruesome act to have taken place to begin with.

I have been reading these comments left by several different individuals. I would like to add that the fact that some of Grandpa Bryants grandchildren were either not born or were young, doesn't even matter. The fact that does matter is that my dad David Bryant, that has recently passed on and his children were robbed of a grand dad and caused my Dad alot of grief. And if I am correct what kid of DNA test were done considering that they didn't even exist then. And further more why was there blood on Red's car in the first place? I don't know if Harold murdered my grandpa or not. But I do know that every thing comes full circle, and hopefully the people that knows what happened, could find it in their heart to tell what they know. I love my Dad very much and I know he is setting up there right now knowing the truth and so do those of you down here trying to cover it up!

I wish to offer you a very effective exercise in non-judgment. Imagine, without judgement there would be no hate, no racism, no separation, and much less fear. This is a simple exercise that takes no time out of a persons life since this is created mentally. For one week do not judge anyone for anything at all. How? When the thought that may be a judgement enters the mind, one simply throws it out, remembering that he's not to judge for one week. We don't let the intellect throw us off by wondering what IS judgement, anyway! Why, we need judgement just to live, perhaps it's discernment, or observation? No, anything that might be even a small critical judgement, THROW IT OUT! Just don't allow it into your mind, -for one week. During the week you will be shocked over how many thoughts you throw out. A humbling experience. At first you will notice a few slight differences in yourself. A bit more easy going, more accepting. Then you will realize that love has filled your heart. Judgement when disolved away will leave emptiness which will be with unconditional love. Liberation, only a week away. It must be a full week. All the people mentioned in these posts have family. Please consider throwing away your judgements which can only feed hate and therefore hurt others.

When something was trying to be done years ago about Leslies murder, the whole family was threatened. Mostly the children, being it was Harold that is understandable!!! Big man that he is and all, so kind and loving a family man. I did not know about the house at all until recently, or I would have done something about it. You see, I have an education where as some of ya'll don't and I would have done anything for David, Randy, Kat & Dud. Aunt Gladys took in her sisters children and did a fine job of raising them. The ones that left there are good people. David worked everyday of his life and made his Children very proud of him. He loved his children and had a good relationship with them until the day he died. They still grieve for him. And Randy Joe is the same. He is a good person with a big heart and he loves his family with all his heart. He works everyday and there is not a dishonest bone in his body. It is not our fault that you all chose to stay in that hell hole and live like animals! And I do mean animals. Even animals protect their young!!!!

I want all this to stop...the sad part of this is we are all probably family on here out of state or in state. Bryants feel one way, Kings feel the other. That is the way it has always been. My dad and myself have always been stuck right in the middle of that all of our lives. This case is about the boys in trouble on our side and the family of Morris King. Either way it is very sad. My Aunt chose Harold King to make a family with, that was her decision. We all have to live with the decisions we have made in our lives. To the Kings he is a great man, to the Bryants he is not but the fact is this commentary is for those boys. Kings and Bryants know Danny Bryant, Rocky and Ricky. We know they are all good boys. I cannot tell you the reason they are choosing each other. If they are covering for someone, I wish they would just tell the truth. Who did it?? No one here can solve this crime and McCreary County won't either. That is how it works there. I just want all this to stop!! I love my Aunt and my Dad loves her as well, and all my family. She has nothing to do with any of this and it is making her crazy. Nothing can be done with Harold on Papaw's murder. That is gone forever. The focus here should be family pulling together as I am sure Morris Kings family is. It is hard for everyone especially to think that one of our family could have taken another ones life. Yes, the Bryants are from out of state. This one lives in Texas and was married to a Bryant for 10 yrs. I knew Leslie, was part of his family for many years. He too was an alcoholic but would never have hurt a fly. You could have slapped him and he would have turned the other cheek. And I am the one that called the sheriff about the blood on Harold's car rocker panel and lower bumper not the "HOOD". Maybe you know something I don't? And the first time I ever met Harold King his son Timmy was setting on a hot coal oil furnace grate and was about maybe 2 or 3 yrs old. He had wet his pants and Harold beat him and and set him there to teach him a lesson. Harold told me that out of his own big mouth. He is a real "BIG" man that has to beat on kids and old people and brag about it!!!!!!! When I tried to help one of my children understand what happened to her Grandfather, and we tried to get the records sent to us, Harold King sent word to me that if I didn't shut up and leave it alone he would "Kill" my daughter. Well let me tell you one thing. In Texas we don't take kindly to your backwoods threats, and I promised him that if anything happened to any of my children, he would pay with his life if it was the last thing I ever did! So as long as I breathe he had best keep his distance from my "Bryant" children. If it costs me everything I own I will see him punished! I am not "AFRAID" of him or his kind. In 1995, my uncle was murdered, stabbed 21 times, 19 from behind...and his murderer has already been out of prison for more than a year. The Bryants are at least honest in our "rumors" and we don't have anything to hide. Like I said before, let the record speak for itself. Check the Bryant records against the King records in your own Courthouse and see for yourself who has the worst record. Or are you afraid of what you will find? The Attorney General's office has been contacted, the Governors office has been contacted, and NO ONE wants to get involved. Even in 1972 when Leslie C. Bryants blood was on the Ford driven by Harold King would be sheriffs department get involved. What a lack of faith I will have in the judicial system if that were to happen. known harold king for 46 yrs he has been a good friend has a good heart kind and thoughtful would help anybody that needs it there is noway he would kill anybody and if you knew him you would know that i believe he was set up you are suppose to be innocence till proven guilty

Could one of the individuals in this case be guilty of another murder,that of Lesie Bryant! There were witnesses that saw what took place and were to afraid of saying anything, recently it was brought to my attention that the case was trying to be re-opened but with the conspiracy issue mentioned from a earlier comment, was the reason the case was unable to be re-opened, but threats were made from one of the accused to stop the reinvestgation and a sudden halt came. Mr. Bryant was beaten and run over and his body was dumped in a road side dump.

i think that all of these people need to be severly punished for what they have done!! there is no call for murdering an elderly man just to get some money. they must be drug addicts. otherwise they wouldn't need the money!!!!

As for bryants murder years ago better check his daughter out. Harold King is the best man Iv ever known only problem he has ever had is being his kids. He is a well loved brother and friend.

i think they all are guity...what about them pointing there fingers at each other...i think they sit down and thought it all out and they had it all plaine...i bet they all talked it over and they maybe said somthing like this ....if we every get caught lets blame each other that way we wont get charged with murder because the judge wont find us guity if he dont know who pull the tringer..i bet they all will act like they aint all there just to get out of the murder....i know morris didnt shoot hisself..i hope the truth come out

I knew 3 of the 4 people accused for a long time, and anyone else that knows them or of them know that they all have shady pastes. I think it is sad that a persons life is measured in dollars and cents.

This is not the first murder that Harold king has been charged with and he has walked every time. Maybe he is the ring leader and someone else is taking the rap for him?

1972 A grandfather was brutaly beaten and ultimately murdered. One of the suspects in this case was directly involved...might I mention he was, at the time, this individuals son-in-law. to this day, the murder is unsolved due to some concpiracy issues. I truelly believe that what goes around comes around! If further investigation into the death of Lesie C. Bryant, would have some eerie coincidences involving his latest episode. If anyone can add, My grandfathers death was in 1972, which would make some of the individuals to young to have committed such a horrible crime, that leaves two. One was only fourteen and too young to be a son-in-law. You figure it out!

I think that they need to check into the girl's involvement a little more. There was a crime in Tennessee, not long ago and this same woman was the one that was invovled and not to mention the crime was similiar to the one here in MCcreary County. But of course she got out of it. Ain't that funny?

Are times really so bad in the county now that people ar getting killed for $100 or less? it's disgusting. you can get treated like that in NYC and at least there's no pretense of small town values.
