Postcard shows old Stearns
Special to The Record

This extremely rare postcard, recently discovered among a group of historical documents collected by Clara Wheeldon of Somerset, shows a glimpse of downtown Stearns, including the Stearns Office Building at far right (today housing the McCreary County Museum), and behind it the Stearns Hotel. This photo postcard was published by E.C. Kroopp Co., of Milwaukee, but bears no date. However, it apparently predates Dec. 25, 1908, the day Stearns Hotel was destroyed by fire. On its back, the postcard bears a message from Daisy Shopbell, then a teacher at Stearns, to Isabel Reynolds of Burnside. According to the handwritten message on the back of the card, the women struck up a friendship during a conversation at the Somerset Depot. The collector, Mrs. Wheeldon died in 1999 at age 86.

Lovely in Milford,Ohio (2/6/2026)
I enjoy seeing how little the view of downtown Stearns has changed in the past hundred or so years.
