McNeely named Record Publisher
By KEN SHMIDHEISER Record Editor
WHITLEY CITY On the heels of The McCreary County Records move into its new, spacious office suite on Main Street in Whitley City, it is pleased to announce the appointment of a new publisher. Jack McNeely, a veteran newspaper editor and publisher, succeeds Ken Shmidheiser as publisher of The Record. Shmidheiser will continue in his capacity as editor of McCreary Countys oldest weekly newspaper. I look forward to working with the business community of McCreary County, McNeely said during an interview yesterday. The McCreary County Record will be a conduit for regional economic growth and professional journalism. It is our obligation to serve as the community information source via our print newspaper or on-line edition. As a previous editor at small- to mid-size weekly newspapers and daily publications, I hold our editorial credibility above all other functions of this great newspaper, he added. McNeely plans to visit area business leaders and newspaper clients over the course of the next few weeks. He maintains an office in the Records new headquarters in the Robert Stephens Building at 48 North Main Street, Suite 1, in Whitley City. The 38-year-old West Virginia native has more than 18 years experience in the newspaper industry. He also serves as publisher of the Records sister publication, the Commonwealth Journal in Somerset. Before moving to south central Kentucky in 2004, McNeely served a 10-month stint as publisher and editor of the Americus Times-Recorder, a 6,000-circulation daily in southwestern Georgia near the home of former President Jimmie Carter. While in Americus, McNeely had the privilege of meeting the former president. An active community leader in each area where he has lived, McNeely has served on many community and trade boards of directors, including chambers of commerce, Rotary International and Kentucky Press Association. He also is an avid golfer. He worked his way through college as a sports writer at a weekly newspaper in southern West Virginia. He then moved on to the nearby Logan Banner, a 10,000-circulation daily, where he served as sports editor, news editor, managing editor and general manager. Also while in the neighboring Mountain State, McNeely served 14 years in the West Virginia Army National Guard. He served nine months as a mobile public affairs team leader during a 1998 deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina. He later served as publisher for a group of newspapers in Morehead. I have enjoyed a pleasant working relationship with Jack for several years, said Record Editor Shmidheiser. Having come up on the editorial side of newspapering, Jack brings with him a deep commitment to community journalism. He also brings with him vitality and a zest for life the should soon be reflected in our pages. He already is making positive suggestions to strengthen our readers newspaper. In recent years, Shmidheiser has served in the dual roles of editor of both The Record and The Commonwealth Journal, as well as publisher of The Record. The appointment of McNeely as Record publisher will free Shmidheiser to concentrate on improving the editorial management of both papers. McNeely is the son of Judy and John Michael of Peytona, West Virginia. He is a graduate of Bluefield State College in southern West Virginia. He and his wife, Nora, have two daughters Shaina, 16, and Brandi, 9.
