About this Genealogical Page...

Courtesy McCreary County Record

The McCreary County Record is pleased to provide this unique web tool for our readers, many of whom are interested in genealogical research of family trees.

On this page you will find an index of obituaries, (date shown refers to the date of publication in the Record) followed by a list of McCreary County war veterans. The active military veterans are indexed alpahbetically by last name under the war during which they served.

The obituary index, alphabetized by last name, is based on information found in the pages of The McCreary County Record. The list is complete from 1929 through 1953, and also includes obituaries from the last few years. Our staff is in the process of completing a comprehensive index of obituaries as time permits. When complete, the results will be posted here.

Most of the names listed here were accompanied with a complete obituary in The Record. However, some deaths simply were mentioned in passing in articles that appeared in the paper, but we made the decision to included them, too.

If you would like to have the complete* obituary for a listed name, we will provide you a copy via e-mail, fax or U.S. Postal Service at the cost of $10.00 for research time and expenses. Additional obituaries can be provided in the same form for a cost of $3.00 each if all are ordered at the same time.

While care has been taken in the compilation of information on this page, The McCreary County Record is does not represent it as absolutely accurate. We will gladly correct any errors and make verifiable adjustments and/or additions when necessary.

*Some obituaries are very brief-- just a name and addresss. We will not charge you if that is the case. Call 606-376-5357 if you have any questions concerning our genealogical research policy.

I was just wondering why there are no "P" surnames listed on here? Great site! Thanks

I was really pleased to find your obituary information. I know how much time is involved in trying to find genealogy info., and your page helps untold. I for one, appreciate all you and your staff are doing, I remember (before my PC) how much time it took to come down to the court house and also to your office and search. Also, I am glad to pay for your services. Thanks again...

I know this is the obituaries, but does anyone know any history on the old Silerville School in Strunk? I am trying to find the date when the photo you have in your Looking Back section was taken.

just wondering (10/25/2004)
suggestion! why not put a copy of all the obits in the public library, for all to see, read, and make copies of? this is the going thing for most libraries.. why are the obit dates, the dates it was posted in the newspaper? if someone is taking the time to type in these dates, why not type in the actual date of death?

Moderator's note: As far as we know, The McCreary County Record is the only newspaper that provides an online index of obituaries going back to it's early editions. This is a compilation of obituraries from 1929 through 1953 and was posted strictly to assist in genealogical research. We would like to hear about any other newspaper that offers a similar online service.

We post the obituaries by date of publication rather than by date of death to provide a quick means for our staff to search our archives for the information. On many occasions in years past, an obituary may not have been published in a timely fashion as it would be today. This means of indexing saves us hours of searching when we are asked to locate an obituary. It is interesting to note that it took some of our full-time workers months and months of time to search our archives in their spare time and compile the current index. This was a labor of love since the cost of compiling the index, and then posting it on this site will never pay for the effort expended.

To make mircofilm copies of decades of McCreary County Record archives would cost tens of thousands of dollars and would require the removal of our archives from their bindings with resulting substantial damage to the originals.

To make paper copies of each obiturary not only would be just as expensive-- just the cost of hiring pepole to do the job would be huge-- but would also subject our fragile archives to unnecessary exposure. You must remember that newsprint, by virture of its composition, will deteriorate with age. Due to the volume of requests being received from genealogists, we had to restrict access to our archives. So we developed this means to help our readers have easy access to available information.

We will continue to weigh the benefits of providing this online information in light of user comments.

I couldn't get the genealogy page to bring up an index of the older obituraries! Please correct!
